Ozempic (semaglutide), a GLP-1 receptor agonist approved for type 2 diabetes and widely used off-label for weight loss, has recently come under scrutiny for its potential link to a rare but serious eye condition: Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION). Risk Factors for NAION
Patients most vulnerable to NAION typically have:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Hypertension
- Obstructive sleep apnea

- Small optic disc anatomy (“disc at risk”)
- Use of vasoconstrictive or blood flow-altering medications

As of August 2025, over 2,100 lawsuits have been filed against Novo Nordisk, alleging that Ozempic caused permanent vision loss due to NAION. Plaintiffs claim:
